GraveTalk 4: The Greatest Comedy Films Ever!

Bet you weren’t expecting this!

THE GREATEST COMEDY FILMS OF ALL-TIME!

I could do a post about all of the stupid nonsense (No not nonces – Ralph Harris is a separate issue) and irritating things going on in the World today, but I thought I’d do something everyone can enjoy (And argue over – Except this is my list and everyone will agree on it!).

So here is my list of the greatest comedy films of all time! (I would put Top 50, 20, etc… but I am starting from top to bottom and I haven’t a clue as to how many I’m putting on. This is hard to put in order, but I’ll give it a go). I’m only doing a caption for the Top 20. Anything lower is just getting the film name and number.

[*Editors confession. This list is in no particular order (Except for Dumb and Dumber). After top spot the order is based on the films I find the best and some sprung to mind while I was writing others. You could that because I forgot about a them, they aren’t that good, but you could also say that I have watched the others more and the fact that they jogged the old memory, must mean that they made an impact. I have left the original text in as a blooper real-sort of thing (And to show the true professional that I am.]

HONORABLE MENTIONS
It’s not that these are bad films, it’s just that these either don’t have enough comedy spots (NE) too cheesy and childish (CC) or I have only saw bits of the film (SB)/saw once and that was a long time ago (WAGO) OR just not as good as the one’s on the list (NG).

Didn’t make the list: Spanglish (NE), Team America: World Police (CC), Borat (CC), National Lampoon’s Animal House (WAGO), Young Frankenstein (SB/WAGO), The Dictator (CC), Shrek 2 (NG), Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd (NG), See No Evil, Hear No Evil (WAGO), The Cable Guy (NG), Flubber (WAGO), Rush Hour (WAGO), Big Daddy (SB), Wild, Wild West (NG), Sliding Doors (WAGO/NE), Something’s Got To Give (NE), The Rundown/Welcome To The Jungle (NE), The Longest Yard (2005) (NG), The Ladykillers (1955) (NG), Casino Royale (1967) (WAGO)

  1. DUMB AND DUMBER
An all time classic and a no brainer for Number 1. A film that makes you laugh every time you watch it. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are excellent here, portraying characters who are just unlucky in their day to day lives rather than being outright stupid as in the remake *cough* sorry sequel. Dumb and Dumber is a film for the whole family and one that you NEED to watch!
  2. FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF
This was a tough one. But I had to settle with Ferris Bueller. now I think they have done the right thing in not making a sequel. Some films legacy is defined by the first film, with sequel’s spoiling them (Dumber and Dumber Too – Who said that?). Ferris Bueller’s day Off is just a film everyone can relate to. You’re coming up to your last days in high school, your last days of being a youth before the downhill of adulthood kicks in, and you want to enjoy a last day of freedom. This film sums up the mid teens-stage perfectly. This film will…sorry is a classic.
  3. ANGER MANAGEMENT
(Confession, I forgot about this. Just remembered it when I was writing about Billy Madison. I have corrected myself and given myself five thousand lashings for forgetting this film. *I have left this in as an outtake sort of thing). Anger Management can be regarding as Adam Sandler’s first hit since ‘growing up’. Alongside Jack Nicholson this film is amazing. It’s not as childish as Happy Gilmore or Billy Madison
  4. DRACULA: DEAD AND LOVING IT!Don’t care, just F**king watch. This film could be number 2. No one can beat Sir Christopher Lee for playing Dracula (My greatest horror films list will be out next!), but Leslie Nielson takes the famous vampire into comedy and does a great job. This is an excellent portray on a classic horror novel/film (Eddie Murphy does an okay job – more on that later). Watch it, just watch it.
  5. LIAR LIAR!
The 90’s certainly spoilt us for great comedies and Jim Carrey was up there battling with Eddie Murphy to see who was better! This film could be much higher
  6. MARS ATTACKS!*
An all-star, Sci-Fi B movie comedy film! This is classic and one of Tim Burton’s under-rated films. This could also be one of only a handful of American-made films where the US president actually dies! This film has Jack Nicholson, Pierce Brosnan (Having just become 007), a young Natalie Portman, an unrecognisable Jack Black and Tom Jones! (I mean there’s more, such as Danny De Vito). You need to watch it. (Okay this should probably be around 10th, 9th/8thish but we’ll keep it 6th due to the fact that Tim Burton does not make a bad film (Apart from Charlie and the Choco…NO HE DOESN’T MAKE A BAD FILM!) Bloody black Oompa Lumpa’s, Jesus Christ!
  7. HIGH SPIRITS
Fawlty Towers meets The Frighteners in this hilarious film. Starring Peter O’Toole, Liam Neeson and other stars, High Spirits is one for the Saturday Film Night.
  8. BEETLEJUICE
Another Tim Burton classic. Beetlejuice is more of a comedy-horror, but this film was one of three (That I know of) that Michael Keaton and Tim Burton were part of together in the 80’s – Similar to the modern Depp/Burton partnership going on today. Beetlejuice is one to watch for the whole family.
  9. SCHOOL OF ROCK
Jack Black very rarely makes a bad film and School of Rock is no exception. Bringing laughter together with rock music this is a film the whole family can watch.
  10. EVIL WOMAN (OR SAVING SILVERMAN IN AMERICA)
This is a typical Jason Biggs comedy. Also staring Jack Black, Steve Zahn and a cameo from Neil Diamond, it’s not a comedy like Dumb and Dumber as it’s more silly things that make it work (Sort of like an early Adam Sandler).
  11. MEET THE PARENTS
Right confession. Despite being made in 2000 I only watched for the first time in 2017 – And I regret it! This is a great film and it’s sequel is just as good (In fact the trilogy is fantastic).
  12. HAPPY GILMORE*
I had to include a Adam Sandler film in the top 4 (Spoiler, it’s not the only one!*). This film is just Sandler at his best. His early films were great. This film may not have any relevance to the ‘common people’ like the top 2, but it has series moments as well funny moments. It is Sandler’s childish behaviour/actions that makes this film great (Like the film below). This is a hilarious film and if you haven’t watched it yet, what’s wrong with you!
  13. BILLY MADISON*
Another Sandler Special! It’s hard to separate this film and Happy Gilmore. Both are two of Adam Sandler’s finest films – Which is why he’s named is production company Happy Madison! This film is just like Happy Gilmore (In a piss-take of Paris Hilton and her family!)
  14. SHREK
One of the first (if not the first) animated films of the millennium. Shrek is a modern fairy-tale that mixes in other fairy-tales to create a great story. With Eddie Murphy and Mike Myers it is a classic film and is still good today. (It all went downhill in the sequels, though).
  15. DODGEBALL: A TRUE UNDERDOG STORY*
This is hilarious. Don’t let the title fool you though – it’s not based on true story. I have just remembered this film, so I’m placing it above The Frighteners due it being pretty much like Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison. It’s funny, but a bit over-the-top in places. Could be higher but I’m leaving it here (Besides the list isn’t really about what’s better. It’s just a list of my favourite comedy films)
  16. BRUCE ALMIGHTY
Should be much higher but I don’t want to mess around with the list anymore than what I have. Arguably, one of Jim Carrey’s best films, belonging to the same high regards as Dumb and Dumber and Liar Liar. Bruce Almighty could be Carrey’s last great comedy film (That I’m aware of – not including the Dumb and Dumber remake).
  17. MEET THE FOCKERS
The sequel to Meet The Parents. Ideally, this should be right below Meet The Parents as it’s quite rare to find a comedy sequel to be just as good (Maybe better) than the first film, but I can’t really keep moving the list down.
  18. BAD BOYS 2
Don’t know how I could have forgot this one. Bad Boys is an action-comedy starring a comedy legend in Will Smith. This may not be family-friendly film, but it isn’t full of nonsense humour but does have plenty of laughable moments. Just like The Frighteners, this may be cheating slightly. Bad Boys 2 maybe more action than comedy but it does beat Bad Boys onto the list.
  19. DUKES OF HAZARD
A great remake of a TV series with quite a few stars in it. Johnny Knoxville, Seann William-Scott and Jessica Simpson all play their parts well, but the minor characters also help make this film good.
  20. THE NUTTY PROFESSOR (1996)
It has been tough putting together a Top 20, as any of the films below could replace these films, however, I had to include The Nutty Professor somewhere in the top 20. This film pretty much sums up how good Eddie Murphy is and probably was the one that started him playing a load of different characters in films.

Now this is where it gets tough. Most of these films are good enough to make the Top 20. But I think that’s a pretty strong Top 20.
  21. THE TUXEDO
  22. I SPY
  23. EVOLUTION
  24. THAT’S MY BOY

Well that’s the list. Pretty sure some of the films listed will get some of you going “oh, yeah forgot about that”. There may be films not listed that you think should be there, but if they’re not included I haven’t seen them (Or heard of them). I am indifferent about adding Hocus Pocus. I love that film and I would put it in the Top 10, but I just don’t class it as a comedy, rather a family-horror film.

Tell me what you think, by leaving a few comments. Let me know what films you think should’ve made the list? And let me know if you want to see more lists?

Hope you enjoyed this GraveTalk. It’ll be back to normal next time – I’m thinking of writing about clowns that sue their parents for not getting his consent to being born and the job candidates who sue because they loose out on jobs. I think someone needs to talk about the this ‘equality’ culture. Let’s call it a follow up to my last GraveTalk.

Thanks for reading. Enjoy the rest of your day!
